A Base Camp refers to a camp that is setup as a base of operations for another objective, usually Mountaineering, Alpine Climbing, or Hiking. Setting up this type of camp allows for amenities be brought into the backcountry without needing them to be carried all the way to the final destination(s). This allows for more comfort and less physical strain, and opens up the possibility to reach multiple destinations within a region that are greatly isolated from civilization.

For Backpacking & Peakbagging

Backpackers might choose to carry their shelters and comforts to a point in the wilderness and leave them there while they dayhike to one or more destinations, free of the burden of carrying the weight all day, but with the benefit of having an established camp to return to at the end of the day. Base camping is common for peakbaggers who wish to summit multiple peaks that are particularly remote, or perhaps untrailed.
