Trekking poles are long poles that hikers use in order to aid them with hiking. They allow for some of the weight to be transferred to the upper body while walking, alleviating some weight that is typically put on the lower body. They are almost always used by long distance hikers, but day hikers and backpackers use them frequently as well.

Origins

Trekking poles have evolved from the more classic walking stick which has been a staple of travel throughout history. Over time, the technology used for trekking poles has evolved to make them lighter weight and more convenient than they have been in the past.

Benefits

Trekking poles lighten the load on the legs. This can be especially beneficial to anyone with joint problems or over-use injuries. On a long distance backpacking trip, they can help maintain some fitness in the upper body that would normally be lost without them. Some find that they increase their speed when hiking on flat terrain. Others find them as good safety devices when descending a steep grade, and they can also be used to help propel the body uphill.

Trekking Pole Tents

Trekking pole tents have become more popular overtime. For backpackers, this allows the use of a tent that doesn't require a separate set of poles to keep the tent standing, which don't serve any other purpose. Using trekking poles as a means to stand up the tent helps cut down on overall weight, which is something that backpackers are often trying to do, especially in the case of ultra-light backpackers.
