Table Mountain is a mountain in the Slide Mountain Wilderness Area of the Catskill Mountains of New York. It is one of the required peaks to join the Catskill 3500 club. It is a popular hiking destination and often hiked in combination with other peaks in the area.
Common Routes
Table Mountain is rarely climbed alone, but can be. At the very least it will usually be combined with nearby Peekamoose Mountain, and can be done so via the Peekamoose-Table Trail from the Peekamoose Road trailhead or the Denning Road trailhead. There is also a $10 fee to park along Peekamoose Road, due to the increasing popularity of the Peekamoose Blue Hole and the overuse issues that have come with the increased use of the area. More ambitious pairings exist as well, with this being one of The Catskill Six, as well as The Catskill Nine. These routes include the rest of the high peaks in the Slide Mountain Wilderness, which are Peekamoose, Lone, Rocky, Balsam Cap, Friday, Cornell, Wittenberg and Slide. Any combination of these peaks exists as a possible route for capable hikers.
Summit and Views
There are no views from the summit of Table Mountain, but there are a few viewpoints on the way up from the Denning Road side. They can be easy to miss and involve rocky out-cropping with steep drop-offs, so caution is needed when seeking out the views. The true summit of Table is extremely flat and passes through a conifer forest.
Water
There is a spring near the summit, close to where the Table Mountain Lean-to is located. There is no other reliable source of water nearby besides the Neversink River which is not close to the summit at all.
Camping
The Table Mountain Lean-to is relatively close to the summit and offers camping nearby. Camping is not allowed within 150 ft. of the lean-to, and there is no flat ground to speak of nearby. Camping in the Catskills is always allowed as long as the camper is not within 150 feet of the trail, a water source, or a lean-to shelter, and is below 3,500 ft. elevation (except for in the winter, when this rule does not apply). There are plenty of designated tent sites nearby the Neversink River, closer to the Denning Road Trailhead.
