The Pine Marten, also known as the American Pine Marten, is a small omnivorous mammal similar in appearance and behavior to a weasel. It is closely related to the Fisher. This species is found in the Northern United States, Canada, and Alaska. In the US, they can be found in Maine, Parts of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada, and the Adirondack Wilderness in New York.
Human Interaction
Some Marten will scavenge for food near areas where hikers frequent, hoping to pick up food left behind or be given a gift by an empathizing hiker. As with all other animals in the wilderness, a Marten should not be approached when hiking and instead admired from afar. Seeing one is rare as they are fast and will typically run at the sight or smell of a human. They should not be fed. They are small and appear friendly, however, they have sharp claws and teeth and can be dangerous.
