PeakVisor is a phone app that helps hikers identify mountains near them or anywhere using augmented reality and 3D maps to overlay information on top of real vistas. The app is available in a free and paid version.
Most commonly the app is used while on a mountain peak to overlay labels on the mountain-scape that the hiker is looking out at in order to identify what mountains are in view. This will help hikers to identify the peaks and overtime, be able to recognize the mountains from their features alone and without technology. One thing to consider is that using the app in this way will require service which is not always available on top of the mountain, as well as a significant amount of data to download the area that is needed for identification. Once the area is downloaded, the user can view many peaks nearby without having to re-download.
