CalTopo is an extensive mapping technology used by hikers to create and share custom maps and overlay important information about the back country. It was developed to aid search and rescue teams and branched off into primarily a recreational mapping system. CalTopo is used by all kinds of hikers, but specifically bushwhackers find it useful in planning their routes because of the vast wealth of information that is available on the various layers. There are paid features, such as offline maps, premium layers, and advanced planning tools.
