AllTrails is a website and mobile application based around hiking. It displays trails, popular routes, and user submitted photos to create a comprehensive user experience while out on the trail. The data is user submitted and user rated.
Main Features
Users can search through a database of routes which will include some information such as distance, elevation gain, trail grade, important waypoints, and photos showing the route. On their phone they can track their hike showing how far they still have to go, and when the hike is complete the data will be stored in the user's profile. You can see details such as how long each mile took, average pace, etc. Users can follow their friends and see what hikes they have completed recently for inspiration. They can also do custom route planning, creating their own maps from a blank canvas using an intuitive and easy UI, getting information about how long and how much vertical gains are on their intended hike.
As a GPS device
Many people opt to use AllTrails as their main source of navigation. This works best when the hiker has purchased AllTrails+, because it allows them to download the maps before hand and navigate when there is no phone service. Many hikers are critical of using this as the only navigation device because a cell phone can easily get lost, break, or the battery can die. Because the trails are comprised of user-submitted data, they are not always accurate or lead the hiker wherever they expect to go. Some users report inaccuracies with the GPS as well as the statistics like total distance, elevation gain, etc.
